SUMMARY:THE SULTAN AND THE SAINT: 800 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:The story\, lessons and meanings of The Sultan and The Saint are rarely mentioned in the Arab or the Muslim world today\, in comparison to the U.S. and Europe. \nThe focus of the conference is the Spiritual Journey of Transformative Encounter that was represented by St. Francis of Assisi 800 years ago. In 1219\, he made the decision to visit the Sultan of Egypt\, Mohammad Al Kamil\, in Dumyata Egypt\, because of his opposition to the Fifth Crusade\, which was raging at that time\, and which expressed the often-bloody relationship of Christian Europe with the Muslim Middle East. \nYet it is interesting to note that this encounter also took place during an era when many European philosophers and theologians were interacting and reading the books and work of Muslims philosophers such as Averroes (Ibn Rushd) and others. \nWith this context in mind\, the goal of the conference would be to:\n– approach the topic from a historical\, cultural and\, most importantly\, spiritual perspective\n– address the increasing xenophobia\, religious hate and bigotry in the West back then and now\n– recognize the current Pope’s focus on dialogue after adopting the name Francis in 2013\n– bring attention to two important recent events:\n*  the historic document on Human Fraternity that was signed in Abu Dhabi on February 4\, 2019 for\n    dthe first time between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar\, Dr. Sheikh Ahmad Al Tayeb\n*  the important visit by Pope Francis to Morocco and its symbolic significance
