Centering the Pupil of the Eye- by Derik Smith
In the late nineteenth century, Baha’u’llah likened people of African descent to the “pupil of the eye” through which the “light of the spirit shineth forth.” In this presentation, Derik Smith suggests that the “pupil of the eye” metaphor is a deeply consequential, distinguishing feature of the transformative social and spiritual system laid out in Baha’u’llah’s Revelation. (2020)

Baha'u'llah – The Secret of Our Century
A meditation on Baha'u'llah, this documentary focuses on His exile from Persia in 1852 until His passing in Palestine in 1892. It shows the relationship between His suffering and the solutions so sorely needed by the world today. In particular, it examines issues such as the waste of war and the cry for peace, the questions of rights and crisis of poverty, the misuse of power and the importance of justice. It illustrates how the Baha'is in communities all around the world are striving to put into action the challenges which Baha'u'llah directed to the kings and rulers of the world over one hundred years ago. (2013)
The Gate: Dawn of the Bahá'í Faith
In the midst of religious intolerance and extremism, one religion—the Bahá’í Faith — offers a path toward world peace by advocating the oneness of humanity’s major religions. This ground-breaking documentary tells the amazing, little-known story of the origins of the Bahá'í Faith. The Gate: Dawn of the Bahá'í Faith recounts the founding of this new world religion in Persia by a Prophet known as The Báb, in 1844. Today, the Bahá’í religion is practiced throughout the world by over five million people. (2020)
Commemoration of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's Visit to Howard University in 1912 and His Historic Talk on Race Amity
A program featuring musical selections and a keynote address by Dr. Ruha Benjamin, entitled, “The Pandemic as a Portal: Commemorating Abdu’l-Bahá’s Visit to Howard University and Its Relevance for Today.” Abdu’l-Bahá is a central figure of the Bahá’í Faith and renowned as a champion of social justice and international peace. In 1912, during his travels throughout Washington DC, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá gave a historic address on racial unity at Rankin Chapel, on the campus of Howard University, to an audience of both black and white guests. He urged them to seek their true humanity, and to recognize that the unity between these races would be an assurance of world peace. (2020)
Luminous Journey: `Abdu'l-Bahá in America, 1912
America was alive with the promise of great change in 1912 when `Abdu'l-Bahá, son of the Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, Bahá'u'lláh, traveled across the U.S. and into Canada. He came with a message of universal peace, the unity of East and West, racial harmony, gender equality, and a visionary view of America's future, captivating all strata of American society. What was it like to meet Him? What implications do His journey and the talks He gave have for us today? Luminous Journey celebrates the centenary of His visit. Shot in high-definition, it reflects engaging documentary storytelling and offers a reflection upon a journey destined to change the consciousness of a nation and the world. “The divine religions were founded for the purpose of unifying humanity and establishing universal peace. Any movement which brings about peace and agreement in human society is truly a divine movement; any reform which causes people to come together under the shelter of the same tabernacle is surely animated by heavenly motives.”- Abdu’l-Baha, Promulgation of Universal Peace

The SGI Nichiren Buddhist community has been part of the D.C. community since October 1960 and today there are about 5000 practitioners in the DC metro area. We emphasize dialogue and the practical application of Buddhist principles to the complexities of modern living. Normally, we gather in small groups each month in someone’s home for informal discussion meetings (although right now we gather virtually via Zoom). We chant together, study Buddhist teachings and share experiences in practice. Each month 150 such meetings take place in neighborhoods throughout the DC metro area. We hope you’ll enjoy watching the videos we’ve selected to help you learn a little bit more about our diverse community of faith.
