Reframing the 25th Anniversary of 9/11:  How Muslims and Jews Can Fight Islamophobia and Antisemitism Together

August 17 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

JIDS would like to announce a new event.  On August 30th at 3:00 pm ET, the JIDS Social Action Committee will be hosting a Zoom-based webinar entitled:  “Reframing the 25th Anniversary of 9/11:  How Muslims and Jews Can Fight Islamophobia and Antisemitism Together.”

Please RSVP at: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/fDHJtJhERMKZG7clkLZHDw

Nearly 25 years have elapsed since this nation was shaken by the events of 9/11.   This 25th anniversary is being used by some to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment and by others to re-ignite antisemitic conspiracy theories.  JIDS, however, sees this as a much needed opportunity to reevaluate and reframe the meaning of 9/11.  For example, we will look at the way Muslim Americans have responded by working within the interfaith movement in order to combat Islamophobia – thereby turning lemons into lemonade.  We will also look at the way Jews, Muslims and allies can learn from 9/11 and its aftermath to better combat the twin scourges of Islamophobia and antisemitism, both of which seem to be spiking in our nation at present.

On August 30th, JIDS and other co-sponsoring organizations will come together to confront these issues with the help of speakers from the Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions.  Confirmed speakers include: Aziz Fahmy, a veteran American-Egyptian journalist with decades of experience covering international news, politics, and cultural affairs, and the author of the upcoming book, “Akhenaten and the Torah Revisited;” and Nina Fernando, Executive Director of the Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign, a multifaith coalition of faith-based organizations committed to countering and preventing Islamophobia in the United States.  The webinar will be moderated by JIDS Board member, Barbara Seligman, who as a professional devoted over 35 years to expanding access to safe and voluntary family planning and reproductive health services in low and middle income countries.
