111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope” – Reflection Procession & Mass

September 28, 2025 @ 2:30 pm

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington invites you to a Reflection Procession and solemn Mass in honor of the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, September 28, 2025. This year’s theme, chosen by the Holy Father, “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope,” calls us to recognize the courage and faith of those who leave everything behind in search of a better future.

The day will begin with a prayerful pilgrimage at 2:30 p.m., departing from the Shrine of the Sacred Heart (3211 Sacred Heart Way NW, Washington, DC) and concluding at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle (1725 Rhode Island Ave NW, Washington, DC). Together, we will walk in solidarity—lifting our voices, hearts, and prayers for those who journey in search of safety, dignity, and hope, and who continue to face profound challenges. Organized in partnership with Jesuit Refugee Service, the procession offers a powerful opportunity to foster compassion, understanding, and unity with migrants and refugees.

Join us for the celebration of the Eucharist at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle at 5:30 p.m. The principal celebrant will be Cardinal Robert McElroy, Archbishop of Washington, whose presence will mark this occasion with spiritual significance and pastoral care. Download the flyer English.

We invite people of all backgrounds to walk in reflection, solidarity, and prayer with migrants and refugees—learning from and honoring their stories. We recognize that individuals with irregular migration status may face risks when attending public events. In light of this, we especially encourage U.S. citizens and those with secure status to visibly show their support by participating in the Reflective Procession and Mass. Our hope is to affirm the dignity of all migrants while remaining mindful of safety concerns.

Please note, this is a peaceful procession, not a demonstration or protest, and no signage other than the official banner being carried by those leading the procession is allowed.
